Hemingway and the Sea Book Cover by Kajsa Klaesén

“Collectors box and covers for three novels by Ernest Hemingway. The box includes the titles “To Have and Have Not”, “The Old Man and the Sea” and “Islands in the Stream”. They’re gathered in this collection because the sea plays an important part in all of them. I’ve used subtle wave shapes to communicate this. The bigger part the sea plays in the book, the bigger the waves get. The inspiration for the color scheme came from 1930’s travel posters.”

Kajsa Klaesén is a graphic design student currently based in Gothenburg, Sweden. She is focused on packaging, graphic design, typography and illustration.

9) David Hockney

Is an English painter, draughtsman, print maker, stage designer and photographer. He was an important contributor to the pop art movement. Particularly significant bodies of his work work with photo collage where by he’d use hundreds of Polaroid snaps of a single image and compile them into a patchwork styled singular image.

10) Chuck Anderson

Is an artist/designer from Chicago working under the name “nopattern”. Chuck designs for clients such as Vans, Reebok, Mountain Dew, Microsoft and ESPN. His work is mostly illustration and computer based, with a very urban, colourful feel to it.

11) Floris Neusiss

Neusiss works without a camera or paint. Instead, he creates images on photosensitive paper by casting shadows and manipulating light. “For me making a photogram is almost the opposite as creating a photograph.

12) Len Lye

A committed doodler, Lye created animation films on 16mm film often with a hands on approach by physically drawing or scratching onto the film. Inspired by Aboriginal, Samoan and Maori indigenous art and dance.

13) Yayoi Kusama

Is a Japanese artist. Her painting collages, soft sculptures and environmental installations all share her obsession with repetition, pattern and accumulation. She explores subjects such as feminism and surrealism often covering people and surfaces in polka dots she sees in her hallucinations.

14) Nikki Farquharson

Is a freelance illustrator who works almost exclusively by hand. She uses colour and pattern mostly hand rendered in an array of vibrant ribbons and culturally influenced patterns.

15) Paula Scher

In the mid 1990’s Scher’s “style” began appearing all over NY thanks to her public theatre campaigns. She is also renowned for her hand drawn typographical maps.

16)  April Grieman

One of the first designers to embrace computer technology as a design too. She is interested in altering our perceptions of the relationship between two and three dimensional space. Known for disregarding practised disciplines within designs that rely on consistent spacing, type, weight and angularity of type.

17) Neville Brody

Graphic designer, typographer and art director known for his magazine works for “The Face” and “Arena” as well as his record cover designs. He is the founding member of “Fontworks” and well known known for his use of negative space within type.

18) Jamie Reid

 Is a British artist mostly known for his work designing covers for “The Sex Pistols”.  His style features using cut out letters from newspaper headlines in a ransom note style and his risky language and phrases.

19) David Carson

American graphic designer best known for his innovative magazine design and experimental typography. He was the art director for the magazine “Ray Gun” and is recognisable by his grunge style aesthetics.

21) Storm Thorgerson

Is an English graphic designer best known for his album design wok for such bands as MUSE, Pink Floyd and Led Zeppelin amongst others.He stands out because of his surreal imagey much like dada work or Dali.

22) Chip Kidd

Designer/writer from New York. Best known for his book cover designs. One of his more famous designs is the Jurassic park image. He is also an avid writer.

23) Leif Podhajsky

An artist and creative director. His work explores themes of connectedness by manipulating photographic medium into a saturated psychedelic array. He creates album/single covers for various indie/elctro bands, most recently for “Tame Impala”.

24) Reza Abedini

Is one of the most famous designers of the Arab world, most widely recognised for his efforts to develop Persian/Iranian typography. Influenced by both traditional and modern styling to create his images.

25) Oscar Marine

Spanish designer and illustrator and typographer has worked with clients ranging from Bruce Springsteen to Absolut vodka by using his illustration skills and designer eye.

26) Kate Moross

Is a British designer and illustrator who has been included in recent features for Creative Review and Dazed and Confused. She uses a very modern colourful styling for her designs.

27) Kim Hiorthoy

Kim Hiorthoy is a Norweigian designer and musician known in the design world for his sleeve designs. His medium is vast including photography, illustration and computer design.

28) Robert Massin

For over twenty years Massin acted as art director of Éditions Gallimard, one of the leading French publishers of books. He uses expressive typography, presenting the dialogue of a single play through hundreds of pages of innovative graphic compositions. Massin not only used mixtures of typefaces and new compositional methods to present dialogue, he also formally manipulated dialogue by stretching and bending.

29) Peter Crnokrak 

The portfolio of Peter Crnokrak contains some impressive visualizations with a strong focus on reduction, typography and visual aesthetics. The London based designer with a particular interest in the intersection of visual communication and data analysis has been featured in over 60 books and magazines and has won a number of international design competitions, including the European Design Awards and AIGA 365.


30) Clarisse d’Arcimoles


Works by Clarisse d’Arcimoles consists of a photograph from her family album and a picture of the same person taken in 2009 in a scene that’s been exactly reproduced. “I called this series Un-possible retour, which means ‘a possible impossible return’,” D’Arcimoles says. “I grew up partly in French Guyana so in the photos I was re-staging, the location sometimes had changed or become inaccessible and the objects and surroundings could not always be found or re-made. But while the people had grown up, aged and changed, I could feel a certain sense of permanence in them. This photograph is my brother at the carnival; to recreate the image I had to repaint the background and find the same costume. I sometimes make the clothing myself, or when it is too complicated to find a similar fabric I ask a tailor. Even if for my family it has been somewhat tiresome to cooperate for these photos, they really enjoyed it.”

1)      Stefan Sagmeister

Is a Graphic Designer and typographer based in New York. He is well known for his album cover designs for or Lou Reed, OK Go, The Rolling Stones and Aerosmith to name a few, and his firm Sagmeister inc. He uses his subject and the environment to make his creations.

“Design that needed guts from the creator and still carries the ghost of these guts in the final execution.”

2)      Martin Parr

Is a British documentary photographer and photobook collector. He is known for his photographic projects that take a critical look at aspects of modern life, particularly suburban England, in an intimate, highly saturated point of view.

3)      Jenny Holzer

Is an American conceptual artist most notorious for her her large scale public displays that include projections on buildings, electronic displays and billboards. Between 1977 and 2001 she used texts written by herslf, But since 1993 she mainly worked with texts written by others.

4)      Barbara Kruger

Is a conceptual artist. The bulk of her work consists of black and white photographs with red/black or white captions, using Futura bold oblique or Helvetica ultra condensed type. She used found photographs for her images and much of the accompanying texts makes the viewer question feminism, consumerism and out personal autonomy.

5)      John Rankin Waddell AKA RANKIN

British portrait and fashion photographer, his works ranges from magazine covers including his own publications “Dazed and Confused”, “RANK” and most recently “Hunger” magazine. From product advertising to capturing the most famous faces of our time, he is known for his intimate and clean imagery.

6)      Bernard Pras

Is a French artist known for his work where he assembles objects to form iconic images. The technique is known as anamorphosis. He often uses objects that would enhance the original image (i.e. have some relevance to the image) forcing us to re-evaluate the way we view it.

7)      Gillian Wearing

Is an English conceptual artist. “Signs that say what you want them to say and not signs that say what someone else wants you to say” was the title of her photojournalism project. She asked strangers to put a reflective slogan on a piece of paper, taht may give the audience an insight to the person holding the sign.

8)      Stephan Gill

Is a photographer who created the “outside in” project. Gill’s intentions are to capture the spirit and identity of locations he shot. He did this by placing objects from the area between the body and the lens of the camera, so once he shot the picture the masked the real image.

I Wandered Lonely as a Cloud…: and other poems you half-remember from school by Ana Sampson, was the basis of my library book interpretation brief.

I decided to explore the idea of an “exquisite corpse” poem (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Exquisite_corpse). By asking various people to recite as much as they can remember of any poem or rhyme of their choice. Then combing the results into a a mash-up poem. This was the result. Enjoy!
